25 Unicorn Street, All Day Tuesday

She woke up that morning with the buzzing of no minds in her head and a cat on her face. "Seriously," Kerrigan told Mustang, blinking a little, "You've got issues." She rubbed at her eye, once, palm-first, then reached over in a desperate attempt to shut off the damn record player.

It was getting the hell on her nerves, as much as the loud clattering noise of the bottles as they fell to the floor. "Fuck," she muttered, under her breath, then slipped out of bed, padded into the living room, and opted to do the morning exercise before coffee.

It wasn't going to do wonders for her mood. She just felt like bruising something.

Coffee in one hand, door-handle in the other, Kerrigan appeared in the opening doorway like a wraith. "Morning, River," she greeted, leaning a little.

"I stole alcohol," she informed Kerrigan. "Children can be useful as distraction. But I gave the bottle to Lee. He wanted to get drunk."

"Can't blame him," she muttered, her own experiences from the previous night still rolling a little over the skin of her mind. "Show me and I'll chalk you up for one, anyway."

She wasn't talking about the bottle.

River recalled the images in her mind. It was strange, Will's presence made it seem like a dream.

"Believe he needed it," she added, referring to Lee and the booze, for once expressing more understanding than anger when thinking about him.

She nodded, in reply. Slowly. "You got it," Kerrigan said, running her hand through her hair. "He deserves some of that, from time to time."

When he wasn't whining.

River made a face. "His son took after him in that respect, unfortunately. But apart from that... he wasn't too bad."

"I could tell by the fact you weren't hiding in my house the rest of the weekend," Kerrigan said, dryly.

"They were louder last year." When she hadn't know how to shut them out. "And two."

"Dean Jones told me it'd happened before."

Well, not really told, but it wasn't like she could shut the Dean's thoughts out, anyway. "What was it like, last year?"

"Two girls, one with an ex-boyfriend and one with my lover at the time." She paused. "One was telepathic and clever and the other one liked drawing and protesting the use of toilet paper." Well, the specific issue hadn't been important. She just liked protesting with her dad.

"Sounds like a handful," Kerrigan offered, feeling a little useless about the whole thing, still. "Did you want to have some coffee or something, or--?"

"It was."

Then she smiled. "Coffee. I brought cookies." Not her own though. Just ordinary chocolate chip ones.

"Coffee and cookies sounds good," Kerrigan said, with a wary nod, and moved out of the doorway to let River in.

River entered, heading for the kitchen. "How did that daughter happen?" she asked.

"Didn't ask," Kerrigan replied, dismissively, following-- and then making a beeline for the coffee maker.

"No clear mental images on the subject?" Yes, she was curious.

Ah. Coffee. There. She dumped in a liberal amount, checked the water reservoir, and clicked it on. "Nope," she drawled.

"At least Dean Jones is nice," she added, finding two cups.

"Lee must've been a nightmare," Kerrigan snorted, watching the coffee pour down. "How did that happen?"

"Other version of me must have been mentally unstable. Or drunk." She picked up her cup. "But he was nice to the boy."

"That's something, I guess."

Deep dark coffee. It looked good. Much better than--

"Almost graduation, huh."

River nodded, then fell silent.

"I'll get some groceries over the week," she said, pouring coffee into her own cup, then held up pot to River. "You can come by and cook to your heart's content."

A small smile appeared. "I like that plan."
