Kerrigan's Office, Tuesday Afternoon

She still had the piece of paper on her after class. If Kerrigan was inclined to be honest with herself, she'd had it with her for a while now. It was starting to get ridiculous: she should be no more vulnerable to stupid human sentimentalities than an armored truck should be to a small pebble on the way.

And still...

She sighed. Perhaps if she dialed the number, it would put that pesky feeling to rest, and she could continue on with her plans. She picked up the phone and went through the old routine of getting a line off the island - it almost made her feel... nostalgic.

Finally, she could put through the number-- and waited, forcing away the ridiculous anticipation in her belly.

We're sorry, a voice droned on the other end of the line, the number you have dialed is not currently in use. If you'd--

She threw down the reciever. Disconnected. Okay. Fine. It wasn't like she cared about it. She tossed the note at the trash can, and told herself that this meant the whole affair was over and done with. Back to reality. Etcetera.

The distressing thing was that she wasn't sure whether she actually believed that.

Some of that ridiculous human emotion slotted back where it belonged at the sound of River's voice. "And what have I told you about taking a little risk from time to time?" she asked, "You could have fooled me... for a second."

"I wouldn't have wanted to embarrass you," River replied gravely, the teasing just under the surface. "The cerebrates do not dance well in peace-time."

"They'll just have to wait," Kerrigan said, idly flicking her eyes over towards the squirrel near the window. "Playing nice isn't always a bad thing."

She might not see it, but River knew Fandom well enough. "I've tried to keep them busy. Their performance of Swan Lake left a lot to be desired."

Anyone else should feel proud to get the slight, unguarded laugh Kerrigan produced.

"I think the lack of legs on their part didn't help."

At least that would be something for the squirrels to report.

"I suggested a personal interpretation."

"And I'm sure they took to that gladly."

"You know them."

There had been an empty space in her mind since Kerrigan left, and now her voice was there again.

"Tell me something about Fandom."

"It's the same as it always was," she said, casting another look around for squirrels. "Loud, insane, and always full of new people. I haven't found much thusfar."

"Has anyone asked about me?"

It might not be that important, but River wanted to know.

"Not so far," Kerrigan said, slipping into a more professional voice. "I'm keeping off the radar for obvious reasons. Have our scanners encountered any species worthy of infestation so far?"

"Not yet," River replied. "The universe is a vast space, but mostly empty."

"And inconvenient, as usual."

"It requires patience," River agreed.
