Kerrigan had coffee and painkillers.

She also had a lot of wiring and was probably located under the desk fiddling with the computer for most of the day. Hey, you never knew when it was going to come in handy to get things a little more... up to date.

Especially with those students around.

"Kinda was. We just ... hacked away at her until she stopped." Rikku hugged her knees. "I think so, anyway. I never asked. The, uh, the tongue-swipes kinda ... got me. Wakka went down and someone screamed so I turned to look and wow, talk about stupid. Next thing I know Yunie's healing me and everything hurts. They weren't so sure Wakka was gonna wake up. Uh, me either, apparently."

"Those are close to the worst," Kerrigan said, quietly. Then leaned back towards the computer, herself. "Bad stuff happens all over the place."

"You've had that, too?" Rikku asked. "Isn't it terrible? It's ... you know, it's funny, I had this split second before I blacked out and I ... I really thought that was it, you know? And instead of thinking of all the stuff I'd miss or whatever ... I was kinda feeling like, I failed. We were gonna lose and that was it and it was all for nothing. Did you ever ..."

"I'm a soldier," she said. "A good one." Kerrigan began gently moving wires again; she liked it better when her hands were occupied. "I've seen my share of hopeless situations..."

Rikku watched Kerrigan's hands playing with the wires. "Guess they weren't really hopeless, if we're still here, right?"

"Depends on who it's hopeless for," she said, shortly.

She was silent for a long moment. "Yeah. There's ... there's that."

"Sorry," Kerrigan said, letting go of the wires and climbing out from under the desk, "We've all got our problems."

Rikku nodded quickly. "Yeah. That's ... I mean ... it's over, you know? At least Sin's gone. It's just rebuilding now. So I'm kinda lucky. I just ... don't feel lucky, I guess."

"We usually don't," she said, looking tired. "Best you can do is hope it all works out okay in the end. You caught the bad guy."

"Yeah. Totally." She shook her head. "Dunno why I'm still thinking about it. Sorry. Usually way more cheerful than this. Gotta move on, right? It's over."

"It's alright," Kerrigan said, taking a few steps back and leaning against the wall. "Thinking's the one thing we can't help."

"Any suggestions?" Rikku said, making a face. "You've ... been through this a lot, yeah?"

"Everybody's got their problems," she repeated, staring out the window, "Just gotta be worth it."

"Yeah," Rikku said, nodding quickly. "Sorry. Came in here to see your machina and got all ... whatever. So, uh, you're from the future?"

"Yeah," Kerrigan said, smirking a little, "I'm from the future."

"Is it nice?" Rikku asked, bouncing a little. "I mean. You've got more technology, yeah? Do people - I don't know. Get along?"

"More technology just means bigger bombs," Kerrigan said, her mood darkening a little as she strolled over to her chair and sat down. "People are people everywhere."

"Guess that was a stupid question." Rikku stood up and cracked her neck. "So ... why are you here, anyway?"

"Just following my orders."

"I'm trying to find out about machina, myself." She made a face. "I'm supposed to be. Really I think maybe I'm just not going back. It sucks back home."

"Get out if you can get out," she replied, picking up her now-cold coffee and sipping it.

And making a slight face at the taste.

"That's not selfish?" Rikku asked, hesitantly. "Cable was saying ... that people need to rebuild, to make the future, and all this other stuff, and ... I mean, I see his point and all. But I'm just so tired of it. My whole world's dead and someone else can rebuild, right?"

"I don't know," she said. She seemed to be mostly talking to herself now. "I'd like to think the man in charge is a guy with a plan. He's gotta have a plan." Kerrigan paused, snapping out of it and glancing over at Rikku. "I'm still on it," she said.

"I don't like trusting the people in charge to have plans or whatever," Rikku said with a shudder. "'Cause everybody thought Yevon knew how to beat Sin, and that's how we got stuck with no technology for a thousand years. And having to take the whole system down and all the rest of it."
