Office Hours, Tuesday All Day

Kerrigan had coffee and painkillers.

She also had a lot of wiring and was probably located under the desk fiddling with the computer for most of the day. Hey, you never knew when it was going to come in handy to get things a little more... up to date.

Especially with those students around.

"That's not selfish?" Rikku asked, hesitantly. "Cable was saying ... that people need to rebuild, to make the future, and all this other stuff, and ... I mean, I see his point and all. But I'm just so tired of it. My whole world's dead and someone else can rebuild, right?"

"I don't know," she said. She seemed to be mostly talking to herself now. "I'd like to think the man in charge is a guy with a plan. He's gotta have a plan." Kerrigan paused, snapping out of it and glancing over at Rikku. "I'm still on it," she said.

"I don't like trusting the people in charge to have plans or whatever," Rikku said with a shudder. "'Cause everybody thought Yevon knew how to beat Sin, and that's how we got stuck with no technology for a thousand years. And having to take the whole system down and all the rest of it."

"If there isn't," Kerrigan said, leaning one of her feet on the desk, "Then a lot of things are worthless. So there's gotta be a plan, somewhere..."

"Maybe things are just worthless," Rikku said, shuddering. "Sorry. Your world's not my world. I guess some people have decent governments, and someone here's trying to convince me that religion's not always evil, but I'm not so sure I buy it. People ... people should think for themselves, but where I'm from it feels like they'd rather do just about anything other than that."

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Someone saved my soul, once," she said, staring at the ceiling. "If that's worthless, then what's the point? People are always going to be pigs."

"Oh, wow," Rikku said, lowering herself onto the chair opposite Kerrigan's desk. "That's not worthless. I ... didn't realize, yeah. And people ... I think maybe they're scared. It's easier with someone saying 'do this,' 'do that.' Doesn't make it right." She shook her head.

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"People are very good at never saying what they think," Kerrigan replied, moving the chair slowly from side to side as she stared at the ceiling. "You've got to accept that and move on."

She knew that better than anyone.

Rikku nodded. "Yeah. Doesn't really help anything to stay bitter and all that, huh?"

She leaned back in her chair. "I went back home, and I laid roses on the spots where people died, and it kinda helped. And I've forgiven the Guado, at least I'm trying, and some of the Maesters. But I still screamed at the spot where we took down Yunalesca. I don't even know why."

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
She paused, craning her neck back and locking her gaze on Rikku. "That's nice," Kerrigan said, quietly. "We don't all get that opportunity."
the_merriest: (hopeful)

Rikku shrugged, awkwardly. "It ... felt like the right thing to do. I don't know. Maybe ... if you can't go back to the place, you can do something anyway. Something here, or burn something over a candle. I don't know. I don't know if the dead know, but ... we do, yeah?"

[identity profile] on-her-korhal.livejournal.com 2007-10-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiled. A little. It wasn't particularly joyful. "Yeah," she said.

"Better than nothing," she offered. "Uh. Not that it's much, though. I mean, plenty of things are better than nothing."
