"Explain something to me, Zeratul."

His attention turned sideways. Kerrigan hadn't spoken since they'd arrived on Braxis itself, and the sudden breach of their agreed silence was-- interesting.

"Why would your people leave such a sacred crystal in the hands of these Terrans?" she asked, striding across the grass at a leisurely pace. "We're not exactly talking about your regular diamond here."

Zeratul cast her a look. "We didn't," he said. "Long ago, this world was a Protoss colony called Khyrador. When the strife between the light and dark tribes escalated, this planet and the Uraj Crystal were abandoned." He looked up, up at the ugly battlements that stuck out from the planet like so much bad waste. "These Terrans have come here only recently."

"Interesting," she said. "Maybe next time, you should carry your treasures closer to the chest."

He considered her with a pained look. Such attempts at conversation... it was the curiosity of the Terrans, not the mindless ferocity of the Zerg. "Maybe," he agreed. "But that is of a lesser importance right now."

"So it is."

She nodded. The next second, she was gone, her wings flaring behind her, running faster, stronger than any Terran ever could. Not quite like them, after all. "Catch ya on the flipside!"

Or maybe, maybe...

The mission went more smoothly than he'd anticipated. Although the damage done to their ships had made it impossible for them to warp in the stronger weaponry that the Light Templars had brought, Kerrigan's abilities were....

He believed young Raynor had described them as 'hell unleashed'. As he watched her cut a bloody swatch through Terran defences, he began to understand just why they had styled her the Queen of Blades. And yet-- there had been no treachery. She had not turned to stab them in the back. She had fought... like a great Protoss warrior would. It was troubling.

Maybe there was some hope for their future in this strange alliance, after all.

"The crystal's here, boys!" His transmitter flared to life far earlier than planned. "Send in a probe to gather it up and our work here is done."

Perhaps he'd been wrong. She sounded... far more Terran... than in their previous encounters. Like Raynor did, in fact. "You have done well, Kerrigan. There is more to you than it seems." And for once, it was a compliment. "Perhaps I have misjudged you." Within the fading clouds, he could see her form approaching. Wings low, sated, perhaps, by the carnage around her.

Pacing towards him, she smiled a crooked smile, running her hands across the thick lines of her hair. Another Terran gesture. Not Zerg. "Given our history, I can't say I blame ya," she said. "Let's just get this job done, yeah?"

"Let's," he agreed again, turning to face his own people. Their light was dawning. "Khas Naradahk!"
