Far above the fray, someone sat watching. Her long fingers rubbed idly over a Hydralisk's back, like it was a particularly gruesome dog. The structure breathed with comfort, one steady familiar heartbeat at a time. Much like hers.

Much like all of theirs.

'Cerebrate,' said the Queen of Blades. )

"Will that be all, my Queen?"

"Pick up River on the way. I'd like to see her up here before she gets redeployed."

"As you wish."

Back to Char. That had been the Overmind's grand plan for her. Back to hunting straggling Terrans who were already hopelessly lost on the planet's volcanic surface.

If she were the type, she would have bristled. As it was, she was merely taking a short walk before entering the Overlord that would take her and River right back there. The idea of 'walks' was alien to the Zerg, of course. Most of them didn't even have the minds to conceive of such a thing.

She enjoyed them thoroughly.

She was already several long strides on her way back when she sensed the other presence, and halted. Something... shrouded. That was strange. Alien, even to her perception. "Who--?"

And suddenly, the Protoss stood before her. Darker. Bluer along the edges, and shrouded. "So you are the abomination," it-- no, she-- spoke calmly. "Very well."

"Come to keep me company?" Kerrigan asked, claws springing to life before the sentence had crawled out of her mouth.

"I am here to squash you, much like the rest of your kind," the Protoss returned, her eyes glowing a bright blue. "I am Raszagal, but you may call me your end. I will not have this travesty festering upon the home of my lighter bretheren."

"Well, Raszagal," Kerrigan almost hummed. This would be interesting. "You really got a way with words..."

Amidst the green, green jungles of Aiur, the Overmind was truly a creature of great majesty. It was a living, beating, pulsing heart tapped straight into the collective group mind of the Zerg, its limbs reaching far into the sky, plugged comfortably into an ocean of creep.

Kerrigan stood before that presence. That great, grand presence. There was nothing she could do but obey, and yet...

KERRIGAN, it spoke, YOU ARRIVED EARLIER THAN ANTICIPATED.

"I wished to give River a chance to hunt real prey," she said, obediently, "And your call is my command."

THE PROTOSS FOOLS ARE PLANNING ANOTHER SIEGE. Its voice was heavy. It laid as strongly on her mind as a million mountains. She swallowed. AND WHILE I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT WE CAN WITHSTAND ANY INCH OF THEIR RESOLVE, I SENSE THAT IT IS NOT YET YOUR TIME TO JOIN US IN OUR CRUSADE ON AIUR.

She bit back an exhale, a tremble of faded anticipation. "What is it you wish for me, then?" she asked, "My brood and I are more than ready to take up arms against those blasted, uptight--"

I WISH FOR YOU TO RETURN TO CHAR, it interrupted. FOLLOW THIS LEAD ON TERRAN KNOWLEDGE YOU SPOKE OF.

Sure, some human part of her grimaced, throw that one back in my face. "By your will," she said, "I will find the Terran Science Vessel and return to you fully suited for battle."

THEN SO BE IT, MY DAUGHTER. She sensed the dismission before it even came, an endless psychic pricking in the back of her neck, suddenly doubled in intensity. GO FORWARD.

She turned and left without another word. It wasn't necessary.
