Some people just didn't have a lot of 'thanks' in their lives.

Which is why, unlike a good chunk of the Fandom population, Kerrigan wasn't giving any tonight. She was in the kitchen instead, quietly sifting through her fridge to find enough materials to make something edible with.

The house was dark. As it usually was. Empty and quiet.

Almost like space. Just not quite.

She thought of Michael Liberty and Jim Raynor, talking on the Hyperion, and smiled -- a little bit -- at herself. Not with any particular joy, but with a rueful sense of place, affection for men she was starting to think she was likely never to see again.

There was this odd local holiday, which hadn't survived into her future, and which she didn't really feel the need to celebrate. What should she give thanks for and to whom? Meeting friends for dinner was an altogether different thing, and perhaps she was taking the whole thing a bit too seriously. She had a feeling Kerrigan would understand though, so here River was, knocking on her door.

Alarmed to River's presence early by the bleeping of an alarm, Kerrigan glanced up from the counter with a mild frown.

Who'd bug her at this hour?

Moving towards the door made this more clear, though, as a familiar presence made itself known. She pulled the door open, and smiled with only the mildest edge of confusion as the girl's thoughts filtered in. "River," she said, "Come in."

River smiled at Kerrigan and held up a paperbag. "Brought you some cookies." This time the flavour was tuna and sweetcorn. She stepped through the door, looking around. There's a holiday today. I don't celebrate it. Thought you might not either.

Never had a reason to, she responded. Quietly. "Have you had dinner yet?" Kerrigan closed the door behind her, turning around to look back into the hallway. "Was just in the kitchen." She nodded her head at the open door to her right. "Could probably rifle you up something."

"Not yet." She had hoped Kerrigan would have some food to share with her and grinned as she headed into the kitchen. "Need help cooking?"

Some time after dinner, Kerrigan had relocated to the backyard. She was logging a few... well, logs onto the premises, judging the area for the least flammable spot. "Here goes nothing," she mumbled, dropped the logs, and stuck her hands in her coat to warm them.

She glanced up at the night sky. "Decent night," she decided.

"Good night for dancing," River replied, spinning around the yard, staring up at the sky. Any night would be good for it if you had just learnt that an future version of yourself had stopped dancing.

"You keep doing that," Kerrigan told her, pulling the coat a little closer. "I'll stand here and hope none of those clouds break bad enough to ruin our fire before it starts."

"Keeps me warm too," River replied. "You wouldn't need the coat. And rain will fall or not, regardless of out hopes." She held her arms stretched over her head, making dramatic gestures.

"You're right, at that," she replied, shaking her head, smiling. "I'm going to go inside and find some tinder or something."

Something was abuzz on the island and the troopers had mentioned something called Thanksgiving, but Roy had no idea exactly what it meant. He just classified it as 'holiday' and went from there.

Normal people tended to link holidays to having company, but Roy didn't really. Only when a certain friend insisted, but that wasn't playing across his mind at all when he went to knock on Kerrigan's door. It would be silly after all.

Coming out of the backyard was Kerrigan, almost stumbling over the plates still sitting on the floor as she made her way to the door.

She was grinning maybe a little more than usual, some slight whisp of happiness curling within. Still, she was mildly wary approaching the door-- until she was in close enough range to make out who it was.

She pulled it open. "Sheriff," she said, "Are you here for Thanksgiving, too? 'Cause we're way past dinner."

He tilted his head, studying her expression for a moment. "No, it's not a holiday where I'm from." And he'd sort of assumed it wasn't in her world either. "I'm sorry to interrupt, I'll stop by another day when you don't have any company."

"We might live out on the colonies, but we're still from Earth, Sheriff," Kerrigan told him dryly, "I've just never seen the point," very little to be thankful for in her life, "But River came over, so we're making it up as we go along. Get your butt in here."

She stepped aside, her eyes challenging him to refuse.

It was the first time she'd actually let herself use so casually what she'd read in his mind - or however it was called - and it caught him by surprise. There wasn't much time to consider it however and he grinned, not one to let a challenge lie.

"Get your butt in here?" he repeated, sounding amused as he moved past her. "Was that an order, Lieutenant?"

"You need to go home or go to bed, River," Kerrigan noted quietly, a little while after the fire had gone out.

She was sacked out on the couch in the living room.

River nodded sleepily, trying to figure out whether Kerrigan didn't mind her staying, or whether she needed to be on her own, or at least not with River. Thank you. This has been a good night.

"Got another room with a bed if you want it," she offered, keeping an eye on the girl.
