Everything about her smelled like salt. She was angry, she was miserable, and she couldn't afford yet another hangover.

There were few words for how happy Sarah Kerrigan was to find her hotel room devoid of any roommates. She fell on the bed with an oomph, glared up at the ceiling, then groped sideways for the phone.

It took a couple of reroutes (and probably added a couple of mental scars to some of the poor fools she got on the phone) but eventually, she hoped, she got the line she wanted.

"I think I'm going to kill someone," she spoke into the phone, with the tone of voice of someone who had said that same line a couple of times over the past half hour, and who didn't mind communicating the sentiment again one bit.

He sighed heavily. "You know that 'human lighter' isn't really that nice of a nickname. I can think of cooler ones."

"If the shoe fits..." she snickered. "What do you propose?"

"My state alchemist title was the Flame Alchemist," Roy replied.

"Yeah, if we're going with that, I'm going to have to ask you to use mine," she said, shifting the phone a little, "And then kids are going to end up terrified."

He tilted his head. "Do I know yours?"

"You do," she said, simply, "Don't use it."

"Could call you Lieutenant of Kittens," he teased.

There was a short silence. "Can we please not talk about the kittens?"

"What would you prefer to talk about?" Roy asked.

"I don't know." Maybe more of a hint of sadness to her voice than she'd like to admit to, "Could go back to mocking you. That seemed to work out."

"Nah, you don't want it to get boring," Roy said gently.

She sighed. "Adama was bugging me."

"What did he do?" Roy asked.

She smiled the kind of smile Mike would have termed 'horrible'. "Wanted to know how I was doing."

"Ah," Roy said softly. "Bad question then?"

"He's, what? Seventeen?" She snorted. "And he's concerned about me."

"He cares," Roy pointed out. "That's not necessarily a bad thing."

"For him? Totally is."

"Is that a him personally remark or a general one where you don't think anyone should care?" Roy wanted to know.

She sighed. "Everyone has their problems, Roy. The kids don't need to hear mine." She ran a hand through her hair. "I'm talking to you, though, aren't I?"

He smiled a little. "You are. Next time he asks, just tell him you've got someone watching your back."

"He's a teenager, Roy," she smiled, too, "That'll go over well."

"He can deal with it. Unless you can't," he teased.

She muttered something nigh-undecipherable. It sounded just a little like 'he's one of my kids', or maybe 'I wish I had some cheese whiz'.

Roy tilted his head, smirking just a little. Okay, a whole lot. "So how are you doing?"
