So.

She had some food in the fridge. And drinks. Non-alcoholic drinks.

So.

She had a couch. And a record player. And--

A birthday party, apparently. Maybe. She wasn't sure.

Lee was the first one here. Somehow, that made it weird. Huh. "I still don't know anything about this birthday thing," she pointed out, with a roll of her eyes-- and a step further into the hallway. "Except that, apparently, it features people, cake, and silly hats of some variety."

"I haven't had a birthday party in a few years," he said, taking the invitation and stepping inside. "Mostly, it's just giving the birthday person a lot of attention and there's cake and some singing and presents. It's not too hard. I think you can do it, Lieutenant."

"No silly hat," she repeated, gesturing at her head. "I think I have something... soda... ish in the fridge." Pause. "...I let River make the cake."

Kerrigan did not sound like she was sure this had been a good idea, anymore.

"Yummy," he deadpanned. "Either way, she'd probably cook better than I can."

"Depends on what she decides to put in there this time," Kerrigan muttered, turning around. Sometimes, River's cooking just put the fear of death in her. She walked into the kitchen. "I should probably invest in a stomach pump..."

"Aww, she tries," Lee said, following behind her. "How are you doing?"

"I have a birthday party and River's baking me a cake," Kerrigan deadpanned, pulling open the fridge. "I've got-- uhm."

She wasn't actually sure what half of this soda stuff was. "Pick something neon."

"You're good at not answering the question," he said, peering into the fridge. "Red neon."

"Do my job for long enough and you'll be a winner at it, too," she returned. "Grab me some blue while you're at it."

"Right," Lee said, snagging the blue bottle and dragging it out of the fridge. "I got your message last week."

"Yeah, and you weren't staying in the dorms when I came back," Kerrigan said, pulling open one of the cabinets and rooting around for some glasses. "If you were still in my class, I'd get you an E for failing at the Booth."

"I wasn't in the dorms because I was in Africa," Lee told her. "Nowhere near the damn statues."

"It still falls under 'doing something stupid'." She slammed-- well, okay, mostly put, but there was some hint of slamming-- the glasses onto the counter. "You're lucky you didn't get your ass kicked."

"I didn't." Well, the trap didn't count. "I was safe!"

"You have a weird definition of 'safe'," she countered, leaning over to reach for the blue bottle.

"I was safe," he repeated. "That's not a weird definition. It's true!"

"You were in a desert." And filled her own glass. Lee could get his own.

Which was sitting right there, anyway, but it was the thought that counted. "That's not safe, that's dehydration."

"We had water," he countered, pouring his own glass. "We had lots of water and the camels were safe and there was a teacher with us."

"Which one?" She leaned against the counter.

"Dr. Mizrahi, I think," Lee said, frowning. "Yeah, that was her. I don't know what she teaches but she was nice enough."

Kerrigan made a noise somewhere in that grumbling area. She sipped her very blue-- okay. Heavily caffeinated. "Next time, go somewhere safer."

"I wasn't stupid, I promise," he said. "I helped and I met a hermit and he gave us information. And I helped."

"I know."

In more ways than he was probably aware of. Sometimes it was hard to stay angry with the constant buzzing in her head. "Guess what. I helped, too." She sounded more amused than anything else.

"Where'd you go?" Lee asked curiously. "Who'd you beat up?"

"Dean Jones' London." Another sip of her insanely fizzy drink. "A couple of people." She grinned.
