Eyes of a Tragedy

Oh look, there was two students standing outside her door.

Knocking politely.

Well, banging politely.

Hopefully it wouldn't take to long for Kerrigan to settle this. River couldn't help letting out a giggle. Lee really had no clue what he was talking about.

From:

The door was pulled open with a distinctly rude sort of pull. "Adama, what do you--" Pause. "Hey, River."

From:

"You need to settle something for us," Lee said immediately, trying to get the first word in.

From:

"He think's he's a better pilot than me." River crossed her arms. It was clear from her voice that she thought the claim ridiculous. He just wouldn't give up!

"..."

Kerrigan rubbed her forehead. Several times. "Right."

From:

"That's not an answer," Lee pointed out, shaking his head. "And just because she has a ship here doesn't mean a damn thing. It just means she has a ship here. So what, I have shoes here. Doesn't mean I'm the better dancer. She thinks she's the better pilot just because of that."

From:

"Not just because of that," River argued back. "You haven't seen me fly." She tried to get past Kerrigan to enter the house.

While River tried to hold back on other things on her mind, it was probably clear enough to Kerrigan that for River a part of this argument were about things nor mentioned, things where someone had actually claimed that Lee might be better than her at something.

"I've never actually seen you fly anything," Kerrigan pointed out. Still rubbing that forehead. She was going to end up with a few red patches at this rate.

From:

"What, you have to see it to know it?" Lee asked, trying to follow River inside because, hey, if she was going in, he was going in too.

From:

"You think trying to charm people to make them say what you want is enough?" River snorted. "Or is it enough to have your family name where you come from?"

From:

"Hey! I don't charm people into saying what I want them to," he said angrily. "I'm not a manipulative bastard, no matter how much you think I am. And my family has nothing to do with this at all!"

From:

"No? I thought you were following a family tradition. If she hasn't actually seen you fly..." River shrugged. "Why come here and waste my time?" Yes, she had known, but she couldn't resist pointing it out.

From:

"My family stays out of this," Lee clipped out sharply. "You're not special because you have a frakking ship here and oooh, people have seen you fly. So what."

From:

"Not a matter of having a ship," River snapped back. "But at least I can prove my claims. Not asking people to confirm what they haven't seen." She crossed her arms again. "That's the words of someone who can use their family name without having to prove anything."

From:

"If I was using my family name, you'd know I was," Lee said tightly. "As it is, I hate my frakking family name and I only use it because I don't have another one. I don't need the damn last name to know that I'm a good pilot and I'm not the frakking bastard you make me out to be because we happen to have something in common."

From:

"Not my doing!" River protested. "You're doing that yourself by claiming things you can't prove! No reason to blame me!"

"The only reason I can't prove it is because I don't have a ship!" Lee shouted. "That's all! I don't have a ship, I don't have anything here to prove it on except the sim and that's not what you want to see me prove it on. So, fine. Whatever. You go on thinking I'm a bad pilot because you haven't seen me fly. Except I know you know I'm a good pilot."

"Didn't say you're a bad pilot, said I'm better. You're not bad at fighting either, only I'm better." River was shouting back. "Why should I lie and say you're something you're not?"

"No, you don't know that," Lee seethed. "Just because you can read whatever you can read, you don't know. You don't. I don't care how well you know me, you don't know me like that."

The forehead-rubbing had escalated to severe double-handed facepalming somewhere half way into the argument, and finally, Kerrigan dropped both of her hands, crossed her now-free arms, and said, eloquently, "Shut. Up."

River fell silent, throwing a glance at Kerrigan that definitely showed some feelings of guilt.

From:

Lee snapped his own mouth shut, still looking angry but smart enough to know now to push right now.

"I don't really care which one of you is the better pilot," Kerrigan muttered, "But you two are giving me a headache the size of Mar Sara, and I'm hungry as hell. So unless you two are going to be making me dinner, I don't want to hear it."
