It had been another-- well, ordinary day was something else. But it'd been a day, and Kerrigan was, as per usual, alone, rifling through her fridge looking for something that might seem remotely edible.

Her record player was softly playing some music through the house, even if she had been tired of it for a day or so after that whole... thing. It was nice, and it was quiet, and if she was contemplating an extra beer for dinner, well, that was nobody's business but hers.

"My family stays out of this," Lee clipped out sharply. "You're not special because you have a frakking ship here and oooh, people have seen you fly. So what."

"Not a matter of having a ship," River snapped back. "But at least I can prove my claims. Not asking people to confirm what they haven't seen." She crossed her arms again. "That's the words of someone who can use their family name without having to prove anything."

"If I was using my family name, you'd know I was," Lee said tightly. "As it is, I hate my frakking family name and I only use it because I don't have another one. I don't need the damn last name to know that I'm a good pilot and I'm not the frakking bastard you make me out to be because we happen to have something in common."

"Not my doing!" River protested. "You're doing that yourself by claiming things you can't prove! No reason to blame me!"

"The only reason I can't prove it is because I don't have a ship!" Lee shouted. "That's all! I don't have a ship, I don't have anything here to prove it on except the sim and that's not what you want to see me prove it on. So, fine. Whatever. You go on thinking I'm a bad pilot because you haven't seen me fly. Except I know you know I'm a good pilot."

"Didn't say you're a bad pilot, said I'm better. You're not bad at fighting either, only I'm better." River was shouting back. "Why should I lie and say you're something you're not?"

"No, you don't know that," Lee seethed. "Just because you can read whatever you can read, you don't know. You don't. I don't care how well you know me, you don't know me like that."

The forehead-rubbing had escalated to severe double-handed facepalming somewhere half way into the argument, and finally, Kerrigan dropped both of her hands, crossed her now-free arms, and said, eloquently, "Shut. Up."

River fell silent, throwing a glance at Kerrigan that definitely showed some feelings of guilt.

Lee snapped his own mouth shut, still looking angry but smart enough to know now to push right now.

"I don't really care which one of you is the better pilot," Kerrigan muttered, "But you two are giving me a headache the size of Mar Sara, and I'm hungry as hell. So unless you two are going to be making me dinner, I don't want to hear it."

River blinked and bit her lip. She knew what that argument must have felt like. "I can cook," she said quietly, then threw a glare at Lee. "You can help if you want."

"You're too kind," he said but kept most of the snideness out of his voice. "I can cook."

He couldn't.

"I can help," he amended.

"Fine." She stepped back into the hall, gesturing at the kitchen in a way that could only be defined as 'very dry'. "Go ahead."

Lee made a face and padded into the kitchen.

He'd seen maybe two kitchens in his life.

Oh boy.

"Uh."

River on the other hand was used to cooking, although the results tended to be rather experimental. She opened the cupboard and examined all the tins, then went through the fridge to see what she could find.

"What're we making?" Lee asked curiously. "I can make soup. Maybe."

"We are still in the process of assessing the ingredients," River informed him. "The result will possibly be soup-like." Throwing everything into one pan seemed easiest.

She handed Lee a bag of onions. "Chop these."

"She got knives?"

Lee stopped and stared at the wall.

"What am I talking about? Of course she does."

Lee proceeded to root around in the drawers until he produced a sharp enough knife to start chopping onions with.

River hummed to herself as she heated the pan, pouring some oil in and adding a seemingly random combination of spices. She then proceeded to add the chopped onion.

She gestured at a collection of tins. "Those need opening," she said. "And the cheese need grating. Only remove the mould-infected parts."

"Bossy," Lee muttered, opening some tins before going for the cheese. "The cheese shouldn't have mold on it at all."

"Still might have," River told him, ignoring the previous comment. She then started to pour the contents of the tins into the pan while stirring.

"She's a terrible shopper if her cheese had mold," Lee muttered before grabbing the cheese and examining it. "No mold."

And then he went about grating.

River said nothing, but she didn't consider 'good shopper' as one of Kerrigan's talents. Instead she resumed humming, stirring the food, which now smelled a little strange, but not exactly bad. As the cheese was finished she sprinkled it on top. "Almost finished," she said.

"What kind of soup is it?" Lee asked, peering over the edge of the pot. "Something from your home?"
