She had some food in the fridge. And drinks. Non-alcoholic drinks.

So.

She had a couch. And a record player. And--

A birthday party, apparently. Maybe. She wasn't sure.

Lee hadn't been to any birthday parties in years as he and his brother had grown out of those fairly quickly.

And it was just weird to be going to Lieutenant Kerrigan's house for said birthday party. Still, he was here.

Sans party hat.

Which meant that, upon opening the door, the first question out of Kerrigan's mouth was-- "And here I was looking forward to the silly hat."

"Well, where's yours?" Lee asked, pointing at her head. "I'll wear one if you do."

Lee was the first one here. Somehow, that made it weird. Huh. "I still don't know anything about this birthday thing," she pointed out, with a roll of her eyes-- and a step further into the hallway. "Except that, apparently, it features people, cake, and silly hats of some variety."

"I haven't had a birthday party in a few years," he said, taking the invitation and stepping inside. "Mostly, it's just giving the birthday person a lot of attention and there's cake and some singing and presents. It's not too hard. I think you can do it, Lieutenant."

"No silly hat," she repeated, gesturing at her head. "I think I have something... soda... ish in the fridge." Pause. "...I let River make the cake."

Kerrigan did not sound like she was sure this had been a good idea, anymore.

"Yummy," he deadpanned. "Either way, she'd probably cook better than I can."

"Depends on what she decides to put in there this time," Kerrigan muttered, turning around. Sometimes, River's cooking just put the fear of death in her. She walked into the kitchen. "I should probably invest in a stomach pump..."

"Aww, she tries," Lee said, following behind her. "How are you doing?"

"I have a birthday party and River's baking me a cake," Kerrigan deadpanned, pulling open the fridge. "I've got-- uhm."

She wasn't actually sure what half of this soda stuff was. "Pick something neon."

"You're good at not answering the question," he said, peering into the fridge. "Red neon."

"Do my job for long enough and you'll be a winner at it, too," she returned. "Grab me some blue while you're at it."

"Right," Lee said, snagging the blue bottle and dragging it out of the fridge. "I got your message last week."

"You must be Adama," Roy said as he joined them in the living room.

"Lee," he said, nodding. "Adama, yeah."

"Roy Mustang," he introduced himself, holding out a hand. "Good to put a face to the name."

"Good to meet you, sir," Lee said, shaking the offered hand. "You've heard of me?"

Deciding not getting killed by Kerrigan was a good idea, Roy grinned and sat down on the couch. "It's a small island. I believe everyone has heard of each other by now."

"Oh." Damn, Lee almost wanted to be famous. "You been here long?"

"Almost a year now," he replied, looking slightly surprised at that himself. "How long have you been in her class? You were the kid she tied up together with Edward, weren't you?"

"I was in last semester," Lee said and then blushed. "Um. Yeah. That was me."

Perhaps he should have felt apologetic, but Roy so rarely was. He let Lee off the hook, though, even if he looked slightly amused. "Did you enjoy the classes? I've never actually taken the opportunity to talk to one of Kerrigan's students before."

"I did," Lee said, looking around conspiratorially. "Just don't tell her that. I think she thinks I just was there to act up."

Roy wondered if Lee was aware that Kerrigan was a telepath. "You have an interest in strategy then?"

"Yeah, strategy, tactics, a different way of looking at things," he said. "That kind of thing."
